Greyhounds Merely Magic appeals

By STEVE WILSON Merely Magic, arguably the top greyhound in . the country at the moment, looks well placed to continue his fine record when he contests the Twilight Stakes at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s on-course totalisator meeting at . Queen Elizabeth II Park this evening. At his previous start here, he broke the track record for the 560 m with an easy all-the-way win after drawing wide at box No. 8: On this occasion he has drawn well at box No. 1, so this should make his job even easier. Most opposition should come from Sir James, which on occasions has shown a lot of ability. He tends to clear the boxes quickly and if he can head Merely Magic to the first turn then he could prove hard to overhaul. Swannee Hobbs was an impressive winner here last time out, and she should be finishing better than most, while the Invercargilltrained Stress is no stranger to Queen Elizabeth II Park, and is sure to make a bold showing. Included on the evening’s programme will be two heats for distance greyhounds, to select a field for the New Zealand Cup on February 4. Heading the list of runners is the top southern bitch, Wee Donna Dandy, which should be well supported in the first of the heats after winning here over the 805 m distance recently, while the track record holder, Aera’s Havoc, looks wejl placed in the second heat.
