Smash-and-grab charge laid
A man appeared in the District Court on Saturday after a $29,000 smash-and-grab raid on a central Christchurch jewellery shop earlier in the day. The police found the man, aged 32, in possession of what they alleged were proceeds from a raid on Kennedy’s Diamond Rings, Ltd, in High Street. The man entered no plea to a charge of breaking and entering the shop. He was remanded in custody by Judge Frampton to appear on January 3. NO PLEA A labourer, aged 28, entered no plea when he appeared on charges of unlawfully carrying an imitation firearm and escaping from police custody.
It is alleged that the man presented a loaded starting pistol to a policeman.
He was remanded to January 9 on self-bail of $750.
He said the Ministry’s newly introduced aerial patrols, which have flown over the Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch regions, had noticed motorists bunching up and following too close — often behind slow-moving vehicles, some towing caravans or trailers. Airborne officers had spotted queues of up to two dozen cars travelling at snails’ pace behind caravans, he said.
