Welles runs away with triathlon race
PA Tauranga The Aucklander, Richard Welles, made short work of the first race in the Steinlager New Zealand triathlon sertres at Mount Maunganui yesterday. A total of 490 competitors dashed into the waters of Pilot Bay at 8.30 ajn. in the biggest triathlon in New Zealand ~ history. There was torrential rain throughout the event Welles was first out of the water after the 750 m swim, and swiftly completed the 18km bike ride and skm run, finishing in 54min 445. Alison Roe, of Auckland, led

Times for veteran women’s and junior girls’ races were not recorded as they were too slow.
Welles and Roe received 1500 training grants for their performances.
