Districts poised in cricket

Wellington and Southern Districts are poised for an interesting opening halfhour when the second day of the second round in the Hansells Cup national women’s cricket tournament resumes at Hagley Oval this morning. Southern Districts will start the day needing 20 runs off its last five overs in the first innings, with two wickets standing to gain the psychological advantage of a first innings lead. Batting first, Wellington made 191 for four wickets in its 70 overs, with Nancy Williams in excellent form, compiling an unbeaten 82. Southern restricted Wellington with some economical bowling until late in the innings when Wellington scored runs at great speed to get a commendable score. Mary Harris had given Wellington a solid start with 56. Southern, relishing the good batting pitch, has reached 172 for seven, with Sheree Harris top scoring with 52, including two sixes. Vivienne Cowles and Carol Fleming also played impressive hands. North Shore was restricted to 156 by some tight Central Districts bowling. Lois Simpson held the side together with an unbeaten 60. Central has made 120 for four off 60 overs, Penny Kinsella batting attractively for 50.

Canterbury was in trouble against Auckland at 104 for six, until Kirsty Bond and Bridget Legg shared a fine 68-run stand to pull their side into a comfortable position. Canterbury had made a good start before Nicki Turner was run out, starting a minor collapse. The bowling honours for Auckland went to Shona Gilchrist and Penny Baker, with two wickets apiece. Auckland has batted slowly in reply to Canterbury’s 175 and is 82 runs behind with just 10 overs remaining. Scores.—CANTERBURY First innings L. Murdoch c Kainuku b Gilchrist 19 N.
