Zimbabwe chosen for Biko film

NZPA-AFP Harare Zimbabwe has been chosen for the shooting of a film on the life and death of the South African black leader, Steve Biko, according to an Information Ministry official in Harare. The film will be directed by Sir Richard Attenborough, whose 1982 film on the life of Mahatma Gandhi won several Oscar awards and received world-wide acclaim.

Biko, a leader of the “black consciousness” movement in South Africa, died in police detention in September, 1977, after suffering head injuries while in custody. His death sparked international condemnation of South Africa’s apartheid system. _ X The cast of the planned

film is so far unknown but Sir Richard’s location manager said the director would probably hire a relatively unknown actor for the key role, as he did when he selected Ben Kingsley to play Gandhi. Shooting on location for “Biko” is set to start in April next year and to be completed by the end of June, the location manager says. Attenborough chose Zimbabwe, which borders South Africa, because of the country’s varied landscapes, said the Information Ministry official.

Zimbabwe was becoming increasingly popular as a site for film shooting, he said. Nine feature-length films would have been shot this year.
