Warning given on new ‘con’

A Christchurch service station owner has warned other retailers to be aware of thefts during the holidays.

Mr Alan Roberts, of Roberts Auto Centre, lost ,?28 yesterday when a man came into his shop and asked for a refund on an item taken from a shelf while Mr Roberts’s back was turned.

The man had said that his brother bought the item two weeks ago but had since

sold the car and no longer had a use for it. Mr Roberts was sure the man had taken the item from the shelf but because he had not seen him do so, could not prove it. “I had a good idea I was getting conned but either way I was going to lose — I either gave him the money or he took the parts.” Mr Roberts said he wanted to warn other re-, tailers to be aware of the fraud. The police had been told of the incident.
