Failed Flirt
The Fine Art of Flirting. By Joyce Jillson. Piatkus/Novalit Books, 1985. 169 pp. $14.95. (Paperback). (Reviewed by Jenny Clark)
This book is appalling. If you need it, it will not help you; if you don’t need it, chances are it won’t even amuse you. Joyce Jillson appears to have collected advice and thoughts on flirting from both men and women with an aim to showing people “how to intrigue and capture the interest of everyone they meet” The small amount of actual material is padded with heavy humour and uninspiring line drawings. Some of the advice for successful flirting is not user-friendly, and even downright dangerous. Of remote interest to the adventurous is the section on flirting haunts, which includes takeaway bars and paper copying places, while there is even advice on how to flirt if stuck in a lift with eight people. At best, this book is a good conversation opener if left on a coffee table. It is also large enough to use as a weapon against unwelcome advances.
