Motherhood

Sir,—l felt very angry when I read the letters from Pat Channings and Lorraine Timms (“The Press,” December 23). Exactly what are these instincts they refer to? The fact that Helen Brown chooses to leave her child with another adult and have some time to herself is a decision for her alone. We each parent our children in a way unique to the particular child-adult couple and choices which are right for one are not necessarily right for another. There is plenty of research to suggest that children raised in a wide variety of styles grow into healthy, mature adults. There is room for us to be tolerant of each other’s way of parenting, always excepting exploitation of the uneven power distribution in any child-adult relationship. By all means keep your baby with you at all times, but remember that it is only one of a range of healthy options for parenting. — Yours, etc., ANNE M. O’BRIEN. December 23, 1985.
