Lebanon pact close
NZPA-Reuter Beirut Lebanese Muslim and Christian leaders said yesterday that a Syrian-spon-sored pact formally ending the country’s civil war would be signed by the end of the year. The Shi’ite Muslim militia leader, Nabih Berri, said that he, the Druse chief, Walid Jumblatt, and the Christian militia chief, Elie Hobeika, would sign the accord soon. That was the . first announcement by a militia
leader that the rival organisations had settled differences over the draft during talks with a Syrian VicePresident, Abdel-Halim Khaddam, in Damascus. The draft plan is known to contain reforms to reduce the political power Lebanon’s Christian minority has enjoyed since independence in 1943. The pact is designed to end a state of war that has carved much of the country into sectarian fiefdoms under militia rule, and to
ensure the return of thousands of Christian and Muslim refugees to their homes.
Syria, which has troops deployed in east and north Lebanon, will play a key role in cementing the deal it has brokered.
Its success is also likely to depend on the attitude of Israel, which has about 1000 soldiers. and Intelligence agents in a “security zone” along Lebanon’s southern border.
