Call for car race to be moved

PA Wellington An environmental lobby group has called for the Wellington waterfront saloon car race on January 26 to be moved out of the city. Action for Environment has lodged an objection with the Wellington City Council against proposed street closings from midnight on Friday, January 24, to 6 a.m. on Monday, January 27, for the race to take place. This week was the final date for objections, and several others had been lodged, said the Town Clerk, Mr David Niven.

In its written submission to the council, Action for Environment listed five objections to the street closThese included residents’ losing the right of access to closed streets, being subjected to unacceptable noise and exhaust gas pollution, and health risks. Onlookers would also be subjected to unnecessary nsks to life and limb, ana the races would promote speed, recklessness and danger in the minds of impressionable people. 7
