Samasaan completes stable double
By
J. J. BOYLE
Samasaan completed a good double for the Riccarton trainer, Garth Jackson, and jockey, Chris Johnson, when he beat Royal Adder narrowly and the others easily in the Park Hill Breeders’ Handicap at Washdyke yesterday. This was Samasaan’s first start since his win in the Chemico New Zealand Cup and his performance gave all the encouragement his connections are looking for
in their quest for Wellington Cup honours next month. The five-year-old Zamazaan gelding will get one more race before the Wellington Cup — in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes on the first day of the Trentham carnival on January 18. Chris Johnson made economical demands on Samasaan’s resources to the home turn in yesterday’s race. He had him last but one early and brought him outside only one horse to
reach a challenging position early in the run home. The favourite, Royal Adder, charged into the picture wider on the track but Samasaan found enough to beat him by a head, a margin that appeared to slightly flatter the runnerup. Vrinsk was unchallenged for third. He pulled hard for much of the way and could not find anything extra when Samasaan and Royal Adder came at him.
