Waimakariri Gorge road
Sir,—l support Craig Whisker’s letter (December 10). On November 9 the Rangiora Garden Club chartered a bus for an outing. When the bus was ascending the hill and approaching the bend complained of in Mr Whisker’s letter, our driver, Mr Peter Batchelor, kept well to his left. We were virtually at the bend when a fully-laden lime truck and trailer came hurtling around the corner. The truck missed the bus by inches and the trailer came even closer. Mr Batchelor instinctively pulled more to the left and a gasp was heard from the passengers. Without warning a second lime truck came hurtling around the comer. It was even further out and the trailer seemed to be almost airborne. How the bus was not smashed off the road and down into the gorge I will never know. Why has the Malvern County Council not responded to Mr Whisker’s timely letter?— Yours, etc., E. J. ANDERSON. Rangiora, December 19, 1985.
