Bridge repairs
PA Auckland Two south-bound lanes of Auckland Harbour Bridge were closed at the week-end while welders did preparatory work for permanent repairs to cracks in the span.
The team of Ministry of Works and Development
welders from Wairakei tested equipment, and worked at perfecting techniques for the year-long repair job, schduled to begin in mid-January. The Ministry’s district civil engineer, Mr Clive Preston-Thomas, said the specialist 16-man team had worked on central North Island hydro and geothermal power schemes. Half would be used on the bridge project at any one time.
