N.Z. abortion levels very low—council

BY

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

Abortion levels in New Zealand are very low by international standards, according to the population monitoring group Of the Planning Council.

It said population growth was slow, women were no longer going to Australia in significant numbers to have abortions and there was no evidence for any significant number of abortions occurring outside the legal abortion services.

This meant that there was a high level of contraceptive efficiency in New Zealand, the group said. .

One area was of concern. The high level of teen-age fertility indicated a lower level, of contraceptive, efficacy in this group. While the abortion rate

for this age group was low compared with some developed countries, it was still much higher than the rate in the Netherlands, which had the lowest rate of teenage abortions. “Our unacceptably high

rate of conception among teenagers under the age of 18 years is a matter of social concern,” the group said.

Overseas studies showed that the only way to reduce teen-age pregnancies and abortions was to improve access to and knowledge of contraception.
