‘Potential threat to National’
PA Auckland No financial member of the party could stand against an official National candidate in the General Election, said the president of the National Party, Mrs Sue Wood, last evening. She was commenting on the announcement by the Sunday Club that it will contest the 1987 election. Mrs Wood said she first heard talk of the Sunday Club’s intention to contest
the 1987 election between six weeks and two months ago. The Sunday Club’s move was a potential threat to the National Party in the election, but it was too soon to comment on the splinter group’s effect on the party. She said Sunday Club members could stand as individuals, but it was not possible to be a member of the National Party and stand against one of its candidates.
