Plane flies on alcohol

NZPA-AFP Sao Paulo The world’s first aircraft using alcohol as a fuel has made a demonstration flight of 20 minutes at San Jose do Campus, north of Sao Paulo. The two-seat, single engine plane uses ethanol, an alcohol extracted from sugar cane, said to give a 50 per cent financial saving. Brigadier Hugo de Oliveria Piva, head of the Aerospace Technical Centre, which ran the demonstration, said, “Aircraft engines adapt better than road vehicle engines to alcohol because they have injection systems rather than carburettors.”

The plane, produced in Brazil and known as Ebrio I, will now be tried out for agricultural work and pilot training.
