Fossicking among pursuits
The art of fossicking in Canterbury is one of the more intriguing items listed in an “Outdoor Recreation in Canterbury” directory, published by the Outdoor Recreation Information Centre in Christchurh. The detailed directory has taken 18 months to compile. It costs $7, and has 157 pages of information on outdoor recreational activities, equipment needs, and safety
requirements. On page 56, the directory describes fossicking as goldpanning, rock collecting, fossil and shell collecting. It says that Canterbury is an interesting place to go fossicking, and describes the rivers and beaches which reveal the best finds. The directory also lists the clubs and organisations one can join fdf extra help in the pursuit of gems and
fossils. The directory is divided into three sections, including short summaries of activities available in the five regions of Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, North Canterbury, west Canterbury, South Canterbury, and the Mackenzie Country, as well as a list of general information on where to learn, regulations or per-
mits needed, national organ--1 isations, and further reading ■ material on the activities, f Maps of the regions showing the location of all the 1 places mentioned are also i provided.
