Package announcement on duties 'welcome’
PA Wellington The leader of the New Zealand Party, Mr John Galvin, supports parts of the economic package announced by the Government. The decision to cut duties and tariffs on a wide range of items was “welcome news” for farmers and consumers, he said. It was unfortunate, how-
ever, that the Government had not taken the opportunity to cut all tariffs. Mr Galvin criticised the Government for not indicating that it would address the problem of high over-all Government spending. He said the level of spending was a serious impediment to sustained economic growth. “The measures announced
by the Government are consistent with its over-all approach to the economy,” he said. “While there may be farmers disappointed that there are no direct cash grants to farmers in trouble, the structural changes that will occur will provide a much sounder financial base for farming in the future.”
