Cricket Canty senior women’s Xis in good form

Canterbury representative cricketers showed good form when the sixth round of the women’s senior competition started on Saturday. Team hours were evenly divided. At Sydenham Park, Sydenham batted first against Lancaster Park, and Sue Brown compiled a good 42 to top score in its innings of 150 for seven.

Toni Watts and Kay Wickes showed welcome returns to form, and near the end of the innings, Andrea Devine lifted the scoring tempo with some forceful on-side shots.

Rebecca Millichip did a sterling job for Park at the bowling crease, taking four wickets for 27 off 30 overs. Lancaster Park seems set to overhaul the Sydenham score. Jenny Olson and Nicki Turner again gave their team a solid start with positive batting, and both timed the ball well.

Park has 22 overs in which to score just 15 runs for first innings points. In the second game, Riccarton batted first against St Albans. Play was slow in the morning session, with just 60 runs scored off 41 overs. The advent of Karen Gunn to the batting crease gave the game a different complexion. Gumm batted aggressively, looking to force the ball away at every opportunity. She scored 58 before being unfortunately run out. Bowling for St Albans, Brigit Legg was highly economical, conceding 34 runs off 24 overs. In reply, St Albans lost the early wicket of Illingworth, but Vicki Burtt ana Ann McKenna featured in another good partnership, restoring the St Albans fortunes somewhat. McKenna has been a model of consistency, riot having had a failure with the bat all season which augurs well for the inter-provincial tournament later this month. Delwyn Costello bowled excellently for Riccarton, containing the batsmen with welldirected medium-pace bowling. St Albans needs 65 runs off 19 overs to take first innings points.
