Swimmers warned
Swimmers are warned to avoid a treacherous rip and deep hole which has developed at South Brighton opposite the Sturdee Street entrance to the beach. A Canterbury Surf LifeSaving Association representative, Mr Simon Duncan, said the rip carried swimmers into the hole and then out to sea, and was most dangerous at
half-tide. The hole is about 400 metres south of the South Brighton Surf Life-Saving Club’s building. Six people were rescued from it last year. The hole would be marked with warning signs and Mr Duncan urged bathers to swim between the flags further north along the beach.
