Rebels just scrape in

NZPA-AAP Port Elizabeth The rebel Australian cricketers scored their first one-day victory at Port Elizabeth yesterday in a nail-biting finish. After trailing in run rate for most of its innings, Eastern Province came within five runs of the Australians’ total of 222. The two big-hitting tailenders, Mike van Vuuren and Kenny Watson, smashed

a total of five sixes between them as they chased the Australian total. The last ball of the match was at first ruled a wide by the umpire, but the rebel captain, Kim Hughes, persuaded him to overturn the ruling. The win was badly needed by the Australians, who have been under attack in South Africa for their lacklustre performances.
