Sewer realignment amended

Realignment of a gravity sewer for Hagley Park means much less disruption than thought to sports activities in the park.

The sewer will now run along the roadway in Deans Avenue from a Christchurch Drainage Board pumping station in Matai Street to the Riccarton Road roundabout. From there it will follow Riccarton Avenue in the grass berm to near the entrance to the Hagley Sports Centre.

It will then run through a natural gap in the trees, along the entrance road to the sports centre, and across

a small part of a hockey field to join a main drain. The proposal would have little effect on sports activities, especially if done outside the hockey season, said Mr Craig Oliver, the deputy director of parks for the Christchurch City Council. The original proposal took the sewer across several playing fields and had resulted in a joint meeting of the council and the board to come up with a better proposal. Rabbits

The council plans to lay poison to kill rabbits in Nicholson Park, Scar-

borough. A plan to lay poison in the park two years ago was deferred because of complaints by residents.

There are now about 300 rabbits in the park and residents have asked the council to do something about the problem. Because of the residential nature of the area no alternative to poison was acceptable.

Circus The Royale American Three Ring Circus will play at Queen Elizabeth II Park from January 8 to 18. The circus plans to hold two performances a day and to

erect a marquee for 1500 people. The circus had wanted to hold its shows in Hagley Park.

Soccer The St Albans Shirley Soccer Club has been given permission to play a game of soccer in the Avon River in February as part of Lent celebrations.

The playing of football in a river is an old English custom dating from 1682 as a chance for fun before Lent. Normally the event is accompanied by pancake tossing and eating competitions.
