Keen demand for big beef yarding

Beef buyers had little trouble disposing of a huge yarding of almost 500 prime cattle at the Addington market yesterday. The yarding was the biggest since April. Good quality light and medium steers and heifers sold strongly and a big offering of boner cows met steady interest from processing companies. Prices for all types of prime lambs and sheep remained firm but prime pig values eased. Prime lambs After a slow start, interest in the prime lamb market quickly picked up and prices for good quality lambs remained on a par with last week’s rates. A shortage of quality medium and heavyweight lambs, suitable for butchers, ensured competition among buyers was keen. The buying power was boosted by processing companies and by farmers looking for lambs suitable for growing on to heavyweights. Once again, overfat lambs were heavily discounted. The total yarding was 989 compared with 820 last week. Values were:- Heavy lambs, to $25.20. Medium lambs, $16.60 to $18.40. Light lambs, $l5 to $l6. Sales included:J. L.
