Eight years jail for rape offence
PA Auckland A naturalised New Zealander has been jailed for eight years after being found guilty on a charge of rape, committed in August last year. Sonny Safia, aged 25, a process worker, of Onehunga, was told in the High Court in Auckland that he was appearing for one of the worst crimes in the criminal calendar. Mr Justice Sinclair made sure Safia was a New Zealand citizen before sentencing him to the prison term. His Honour said it might be time for persons who committed serious crimes to have citizenship or residency rights reviewed.
This would put a “premium on good behaviour” for those who chose to leave their native country and live in New Zealand.
