Elizabeth’s death

Elizabeth, the Christchurch sea elephant, died from bronchial pneumonia complicated by a viral infection, autopsy results revealed yesterday. There was nothing unusual about the cause of death, said a Ministry of Fisheries officer, Mr Robin Reid.

“Elizabeth had been prone to snuffles and colds in the past," he said. More autopsy results were expected from the Ministry in Wellington next week. They would not concern the cause of death, but would be more useful to marine knowledge generally.
