Clerical advocate angry
An angry response has come from an employers’ advocate, Mr Colin Mclnnes, to union predictions regarding the clerical workers’ award negotiations in Christchurch this week.
“The secretary of the Canterbury Clerical Workers’ Union, Mr Leon Morel, has predicted that settlement of the award is unlikely in the three days of negotiations due to start
today,” said Mr Mclnnes, who is director of the Canterbury Employers’ Association. “Predictions like this from the union will do little to help the parties get to grips with their differences. If the clerical workers’ expectations have been raised to levels which are out of touch with reality, settlement will obviously be made more difficult,” he said.
Both parties had to try their best to reach agreement. Many workplaces had indicated a willingness to take strong action in the event of award breakdown, Mr Mclnnes said. Talk of breakdown was premature. “In any event there are clear procedures to follow where settlements cannot be reached and they do not include illegal strike action,” he said.
