Borrowed Time close to record

Borrowed Time, a C2 trotter, went within less than half a second of Sir Castleton’s track record established in 1982 when he won the Waihora Park Centennial Handicap at Motukarara on Saturday. Raced by a former leading trainer, Jack Litten, and trained and driven for him by his son-in-law, Robin Butt, he trotted the 2800 m in 3min 45.15, 0.4 s outside the record. Borrowed Time received a splendid run close to the pace and he tracked Firm Offer when she moved to

the front 1100 m out. The son of Game Pride and White Plains had the “drop” on Firm Offer and came on to beat her easily by two lengths. So strong was the pace that there was a break of seven lengths back to the third horse, Danny Cord, which shaded Front Up. The surprise favourite, Soon, was trotting well in mid-field until she was badly checked when Doncella broke inside the last 900 m and caused a chain reaction. She did well to recover and finish eighth.
