Four outright victories
The opening games of the senior suburban cricket competition ended at the week-end with Vistalite Sumner, Heathcote, Hoon Hay and Woolston W.M.C. all gaining outright wins.
At Garrick Park, Woolston W.M.C. and Upper Riccarton both scored 104 in the first innings but Upper Riccarton produced a dismal 51 runs in the second innings, showing a lack of application on a tough wicket. Gary Baxter’s bowling of seven wickets for 27 in the second innings and 5/35 in the first was the highlight of the game. Requiring 52 runs to win, Woolston W.M.C. lost just one wicket with Murray Hartland and John Fielding not out scores of 21 and 20 respectively. At St Leonard’s Square Christchurch W.M.C. chased Vistalite Sumner’s 224 for five declared. Kevin Simcock continued batting but was eventually ran out for 48. Ron Provan’s wicket was the last to fall closing the first innings at 123. Tony MeKendry asked Christchurch W.M.C. to bat again, and in reply, it scored 167. Kevin Williams top scored on 70 runs. ' Vistalite Sumner easily scored the required 67 runs. With consistent scoring again from the top order batsmen: Roger Campbell, Charlie Cross, and George Nicol.
