Tongan writ withdrawn

From MARY FONUA in Nukualofa The Tongan member of Parliament, Mr Masao Paasi, has withdrawn a writ of impeachment he served on the puisne judge, Mr Justice Harwood, in midSeptember. Mr Paasi had claimed that Mr Justice Harwood had infringed Tonga’s constitution but after two days of heated debate in the Legislative Assembly over the technicalities of how to proceed with an impeachment, Mr Paasi gave in to mounting political and social pressure for a reconciliation and retracted his writ before a Parliamentary sub-committee. Mr Justice Harwood has just ended a two-year term in the kingdom and is returning to Britain.
