All Whites miss cash bonus

New Zealand fell short of collecting a $5OOO bonus by just one goal when it beat Chinese-Taipei in its World Cup soccer qualifying match at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

The New Zealand coach, Kevin Fallon, revealed after his team’s 5-0 victory that an Auckland businessman had promised the money if the All Whites scored 11 times over the two games with the Chinese. Having won the first match, 5-1, in Auckland a week earlier, the AH Whites needed to go one better on Saturday, but

missed a penalty, had two goals disallowed, and squandered two clear openings to end up winning, 5-0.

The defensive approach to the match of the Chinese team did not particularly surprise Mr Fallon — “I think they really wanted to just keep the score down” — but he was disappointed, for the second successive week, with the lenient attitude of an Australian referee towards the time wasting of the Chinese.

He had earlier estimated that when the teams met at Auckland nine days ago,

about'3o minutes had been lost through delaying tactics by the visiting team. He believed that the decision on Saturday of the referee, Mr Donald Campbell, to disallow Grant Turner’s seemingly legitimate goal in the third minute was “very harsh.”

Asked for his opinion of. Mr Campbell’s performance, Mr FaHon paused for several seconds, then, choosing his words carefully, replied, "I wasn’t happy with the referee over aH." He has set no target of points for New Zealand to be sure of winning the

Oceania group and earning itself the right to play off with Scotland to get to the finals in Mexico next year. His aim, which would make talk of points targets irrelevant, is simply “to win every game.”

His squad now has two days off before returning to camp to prepare for the All Whites next World Cup match, against Israel in Auckland on Qctahfir_26.
