Treason trial resumes
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg South Africa has resumed the trial of leading antiapartheid dissidents on treason charges in spite of a rebuke from the United States, its closest ally. The United States State Department said yesterday it regretted South Africa’s decision to continue the trial of 16 opponents of the Government who face pos-
sible death sentences if convicted on charges of supporting the overthrow of the white Government. When the trial resumed, treason allegations were challenged by the defence team, which is without its leading black human rights lawyer, Victoria Mxenge. She was shot dead last week. The United States and most of Pretoria’s other
Western allies have sharpened their attacks on the South African Government since it imposed a state of emergency on July 21 to stop unrest. The Government of President Pieter Botha has still not responded to the challenge by the powerful black gold and coal miners’ union to lift detention measures or face a boycott of whiteowned businesses.
