Man convicted of assaulting unionist

PA Auckland A labourer at New Zealand Steel’s mill extension project at Glenbrook was convicted yesterday of assaulting a Carpenters’ Union delegate at the construction site. The labourer, Mark Whatamate Aperhama Sadler, aged 26, of Hamilton, had denied in the District Court at Papatoetoe a charge of assaulting a union delegate, Mr Allan Norton, on June 4. Sadler also pleaded not

guilty to a charge of driving a van on an access way to the mill construction site while disqualified from driving. Judge Duncan convicted him on both charges after a defended hearing. He remanded Sadler to appear for sentence in the District Court at Otahuhu on August 26 and called for a probation report.

Bail of $5OO was continued.
