Reunion for engineers
Fifty years ago today the Canterbury branch of the Institute of Professional Engineers was formed at the meeting at the Occidental Hotel. This evening about 140 members of the branch will meet at the hotel again, before going on to the Civic Regency for an anniversary dinner. Included in the gathering will be a foundation member of the branch, Mr Edwin Fox Scott. Mr Scott
was named after the ship in which his father was electrical engineer, the Edwin Fox, now beached in Shakespeare Bay, near Picton.
A third engineering generation of the family, Mr Bruce Scott, the streetworks engineer for the Christchurch City Council, will also attend. Another foundation member, Mr H. G. Royds, still lives in Christchurch but is unable to attend.
The atmosphere for the dinner will be set by the showing of an early film on road construction in New Zealand and the presence of engineering equipment from the 19305. Speakers at the dinner will be the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mrs Margaret Austin, and an engineering consultant, Mr Charles Martin.
