Farewell to Wes Cameron
Mr Wes Cameron, the longest-serving president of the Canterbury Trades Council and said to be the first South Islander on the executive of the Federation of Labour, was bidden farewell by the trade union movement at a function in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Cameron has been appointed as an employee representative on the Arbi-
tration Court, and will be based in Wellington when he takes up . his appointment next week. Trade union colleagues, and representatives of the meat industry, Labour Department, Canterbury Employers’ Association, the mediation and conciliation service, State unions, and other organisations attended the function.
The vice-president of the Canterbury Trades Council, Mr Dick Lowe, presented Mr Cameron with a cheque on behalf of trade unions. Nominations will be called to succeed him as secretary of the Canterbbury branch of the Meat Workers’ Union, president of the Trades Council, and as a member of the executive of the F.O.L. Mr Tiny Kirk, a
senior organiser of the Canterbury branch of the Meat Workers’ Union, will be interim secretary of the branch from Monday. The function was held at the Winter Garden, alongside the Trade Union Centre in Armagh Street. The Winter Garden building was bought by the Trade Union Centre in March last year.
