Hope for long ice period
Although the official opening of the ice skating season at Lake Ida today will mean the latest start since. 1977, the president of the Lake Ida Winter Sports Association, Mr Bert Lyttle, is hoping that the ice will last longer than in recent seasons. The last two winters have been disastrous for the controlling body which the
lake, skaters having had only a few week-ends outdoors before north-westerly winds have broken and melted the ice. But Mr Lyttle said yesterday that a report received from the lake that morning augured well. There was a good scm covering of ice on the enclosure and across the main lake described as ideal ice for skating, black and smooth.
