Six Chch teams in first hockey round

Six Christchurch teams will be involved in the first round of the national interclub knockout hockey competition on Sunday. Selwyn, the beaten finalist last year, has drawn a bye in the first round, but the other Christchurch teams are all playing either Dunedin or Ashburton teams. Last year the organisers seeded the draw so that Christchurch teams met in the first round. Several

teams felt that defeated the purpose of the competition which was to pit clubs from other areas against each other. The competition will be sponsored by Brierley’s this year. Two teams, Liquorland Harewood and Kent Prier Redcliffs, will travel to Dunedin. Harewood will play Otago University A and should comfortably beat the Dunedin side, provided it produces a consistent performance.

Redcliffs will play Taieri, and it too should have too much skill for its opponent. Pegasus will travel to Ashburton to play Tinwald. High School Old Boys will have a difficult assignment against a top Dunedin team, United, in Christchurch, and Daniel Visser Sydenham will play another Otago team, Otago University B. Woolston will play College Old Boys of Ashburton in Christchurch.
