Illegal introduction of virus?

PA Auckland The killer rabbit virus, myxomatosis, would be brought into New Zealand illegally if it was not introduced officially, the chairman of the Agricultural Pests Destruction Council, Mr Ged Foley, has said. He told a public meeting in Auckland yesterday that myxomatosis would be simple to bring into New

Zealand. “Of course, the council is totally opposed to illegal introduction, but I am telling you it will be done.” After the meeting, Mr Foley said the myxomatosis virus and the flea which spread it were both in Australia, and he had heard suggestions from within the farming community that if the virus was not officially introduced it would be

brought in illegally. “This is not meant as a threat, by any means,” said Mr Foley. “Indeed, I would be irresponsible if it was, but I have that fear. It arises from the ease with which illegal introduction could be made.” The national director of the S.P.C.A., Mr Neil Welles, said after the meeting that the illegal introduction of myxomatosis was a fear.
