No inquiry into ship fire
PA Wellington A formal inquiry will not be held into the fire in the cargo ship Castle Peak at Bluff last February, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble.
The ship, registered at Hong Kong, was berthed at a meat loading wharf at Island Harbour, Bluff, when the fire broke out.
The fire began in one of the ship’s generators as two crew members were preparing to change the filter cartridge. A screw blew out under considerable oil pressure and the oil ignited.
It burned for 30 minutes before the crew were able to extinguish it, and it resulted in extensive damage. Some crew members suffered minor singing and smoke inhalation, Mr Prebble said.
A preliminary inquiry was held and a report suggested a number of measures which could be taken to help prevent such a fire occurring again. A copy of the report has been sent to shipping authorities in Hong Kong.
Mr Prebble said he was satisfied a formal inquiry was not warranted.
