N-blast at Mururoa
PA Wellington An underground nuclear explosion was detected in the vicinity of Mururoa Atoll yesterday, the Seismological Observatory reported. The blast, recorded at 5.29 a.m. New Zealand time, by seismograph operators in Rarotonga, had an approximate yield of 10 kilotons, said a seismologist, Mr Murray Lowry. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said he was appalled that France had exploded a nuclear device.
Calling for a halt to testing, Mr Lange said the New Zealand Government would make its strong concerns known to the French authorities.
