Horse trek to raise funds

Paul Eberbart, aged three, meets Somedream (left) and Imagold (right) before the horses and their ownerrider, Mr Geoff Harrington, leave Christchurch for Bluff to take part in a trek to raise money for the Crippled Children Society. Paul is being held by Momoko Kaneko, a volunteer worker at the society’s Kilmarnock Street centre. The trek, from Bluff to Rotheram, North Canterbury, with “fun happenings” activities in towns along the route, will start on Saturday.

The trek has been organ-

ised by the Amuri Lions Club and will reach Rotheram on Sunday, May 12. Horses and trek equipment left for Bluff yesterday.

“Fun happenings” will be held in each town where a branch of the society is located. In areas where there is also a branch of the Countrywide Building Society, the Crippled Children Society branch will be given a wheelchair or similar equipment.

The Canterbury and West Coast branch of the society will be given two wheelchairs when the trek

reaches Christchurch on Friday, May 10. The first presentation will be made about 11.80 a.m. at the Riccarton branch of Countrywide, The second

wheelchair will be presented at 12.15 p.m. at the Countrywide branch at 705 Colombo Street. The trek will then move to Cathedral Square where the Wizard will be “kidnapped” and held to ransom. When captured, the Wiz-

ard will be put in a wheelchair and taken away in a mini-bus, in convoy with a decorated horse float. He

will be hidden until May 12, and will reappear in a raised bucket at the Rotheram Country Fair. A "trial of strength" between members of Alf’s Imperial Army, the horse and rider from the trek, and the Amuri Lions will take place and end with the Wizard being freed in return for ransom payment by representatives of Countrywide. As well as presenting wheelchairs, valued at $549 each, Countrywide will continue to pay 0.5 per cent on all accounts opened on May 10 to the Crippled Children Society.
