Andronicus wins well at Addington trials

By

JEFF SCOTT

Andronicus firmed in favour for the Murray Taylor Mobile Pace at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday when he won narrowly but well at yesterday’s Addington trials. A major disappointment at the New Brighton meeting last Thursday when only ninth, the Marshland-trained gelding indicated that the performance was only a temporary lapse by racing in the open throughout yesterday and winning without being extended by a neck in 3min 27.9 s (2600 m

The four-year-old son of Honkin Andy and Scottish Pride outfinished the pacemaker from the 1800 m, Waikato,. with Isel (20m), dashing home late for third, a neck back, after trailing three back on the outer to the straight. Jovial Jan, handy on the outer, and Ryal Robyn, which led then trailed, were close up next. The leaders ran over their closing 800 m in Imin 2.3 s and their final 400 m in 31s.

Luna Dawn, promoted to third in the Great Northern Oaks, and a candidate for the Nevele R Stud New Zealand Oaks on Saturday, trailed three back on the

inner yesterday and made ground in cramped quarters to finish in behind the leading division. She ran her last 2400 m in 3min 10.2 s and her closing 400 m in 30.8 s and looks fit for the fillies’ classic.

Borrowed Time, which has been transferred to Robin Butt’s West Melton stable, enhanced his prospects for the Vodka Handicap on Saturday when he won the C2 and faster trotters’ heat in 3min 31s, the leaders running their last 800 m in 59.9 s and their last 600 m in 30.75.

A fine third to Highwood and Wedgewood in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes last time after losing ground early, Borrowed Time began well yesterday and trailed handy on the outer. He tracked Racey Tracey into the straight and came on to win well by a length from Sure Winner, which ran on solidly after settling back on the inner.

Racey Tracey, which improved to be in the open at the 1400 m and dashed clear on the home turn, was cut back to third, a length and a half away. Roman Guy, a form runner for the second leg of the T.A.B. treble on Saturday, settled back on the

inner, and, along with Tussle (60m), made ground late to head the others, six and a half lengths back.

Horizon finished well from a handy place on the outer to beat Cordon Noir and the pacemaker, Lisa Best, in the Cl pacers’ heat in 3min 30s, the leaders quickening over their last 800 m in 59.55.

Free’s Best, which contests the fillies heat of the Sires’ Produce Stakes on Saturday, dashed through late from the trail to win her two-year-old heat yesterday over 2000 m in 2min 44.55, the leaders running their last 400 m in 31s. The Besta Fella — Free Dream filly outfinished Papal Gold, a half-sister by Valerian to Harvest Gold in Jack Smolenski’s team, which had moved up to be in the open for much of the running. The pacemaker, Faust (Stanley Rio—Orfeo), was a neck back, third. Lady Sovereign overcame a slow start to win the second juvenile heat in 2min 47.55, winning comfortably by a length from Young Vic and Bandstan, the leaders running their closing 400 m in 30.25.
