Noise at concerts
Sir,—l felt ashamed to have been a member of an audience in the Christchurch Town Hall recently to see a performance of an orchestral nature. The loud uncontrolled coughing and sneezing were so bad. that at times I sat in disbelief. To top it all off, the spectre of the spread-eagled reporter who yawned and then as a finale, unwrapped a sweet, just when all was quiet and expectant (the noise from this would certainly have woken the dead) was almost too much to endure. As Christchurch audiences seem such an unsophisticated bunch, perhaps it might be appropriate to write a plea on the programmes asking patrons to show some respect.— Yours, etc., B. T. MARKHAM. April 29, 1985.
