Johnnys to tour

A band described variously as a cross between Marty Robbins and the Sex Pistols, or “John Wayne meets The Cramps, via a dozen tequilas,” will tour New Zealand soon.

The Johnnys, from Australia, are firm believers in rock ’n’ roll as dumb fun, not to be taken seriously. They apparently do to country music something similar to what the Hoodoo Gurus do to 60’s pop.

Their credits include two singles, “I Think You’re Cute” and “My Buzzsaw Baby (Really Cut Me Up),” the latter produced by Steve Nieve (of Costello’s Attractions) and recording of an LP is currently “under negotiation.”

Two band members, Spencer P. Jones and Billy Pommer, jnr, played with the U.S. band, The Gun Club, when two original members of that band left at the onset of a recent Aussie tour.

On stage, they tote sixguns, wear genuine western gear, leave hay bales around the stage, and generally look “purty” cool in the saddle.
