Sir, — M. Creel over-estimates his powers of emphatic statement. To say that X is not quite as evil as Y implies that the difference between them is not very great. The difference in question happens to be apartheid, and M. Creel is therefore “emphatically stating” that apartheid is not a very great evil. Even if he had managed to make a truly emphatic statement this would have added nothing to the argument.
Emphasis and repetition have no necessary connection with truth, but may cause lies to be believed, as the totalitarian propagandists of Left and Right have long been aware. On the subject of repetition your readers will perhaps have noted that A. J. Campbell has now had 900 words in which to complain that he cannot answer a fairly simple question in 150 words, although he has managed to repeat his views on subjects he would rather write about. — Yours, etc., JACK BEVAN.
