Plea for park peace

Sir—Last Thursday morning the peace and quiet of Arthur’s Pass was shattered by the din of enormous radio/tape players lugged by a group of primary school pupils walking towards the Punchbowl and Bridal Veil tracks. The pupils’ ears (if not already permanently damaged) would have had no chance of hearing the rivers and waterfalls, or the songs of the bellbirds and riflemen. Surely those in charge at the Outdoor Education Centre could, and should, “confine to barracks” these instruments of torture — to be used there only to comfort homesick city children who are at the pass, presumably to study and enjoy the pleasures of the national park. — Yours, etc., D. T. STEWART. March 31, 1985.
