Peace women arrested

NZPA-PA London Thirty-four women peace campaigners were arrested early yesterday after staging a ‘mass trespass* at the Greenham Common cruise missile base to mark the introduction of anti-demon-stration by-laws. The women now face charges under the new regulation which, in line with similar counter-protest measures at the Molesworth air base in Cambridgeshire, came into force yesterday. The local by-laws, implemented under the 1892 Military Lands Act, mean that demonstrators can be fined up to £lOO ($260) for entering the bases without permision, obstructing the police within the area, damaging official noticeboards and other offences. Their introduction comes after complaints from the local police that their powers to deal with demonstrations at Greenham have been inadequate. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said that the women had been quickly apprehended by the police
