Man charged with abetting murder
A man charged with aiding and abetting another person in the murder of a woman in the United Service Hotel public bar last week was remanded in the District Court yesterday in custody to April 11 for the setting of a depositions date. Before Judge Frampton was Michael Alexander Emslie, aged 21, a labourer (Mr E. Bedo). Emslie is charged with being a party to the murder of Debra Rosemary Paul by aiding and abetting in the commission of the alleged offence. When the defendant first appeared on Saturday he was granted interim suppression of his name. No application for continuing the order was made yesterday. Emslie appeared alone in the dock, his hands handcuffed behind his back. ARMS CHARGES
Nine men and three women appeared as a result bf police investigations and
visits to gang headquarters at the week-end. All 12, Black Power members and their associates, were remanded without plea on bail of $750 to April 22. They are charged with the unlawful possession on March 30 of a .22 rifle, an air pistol, a gas-operated pistol, and five molotov cocktails. The defendants are Allan John Emslie, aged 17; William Arthur Houkamau, aged 20; Richard Wiki, aged 25; Shane Piripi Turner, aged 31; Andrew Daniels, aged 17; Wally Awatere, aged 27; Ardie Beazley, aged 30; John Daniels, aged 20; and Raymond Ken Lavery, aged 25. Wiki is described as a labourer. The rest are all unemployed. The three women defendants are Stephanie Marie Beazley, aged 23; Neta Shelford, aged 20; and Sonya Katrina Slater, aged 19.
In addition to the arms
charge Lavery is charged with possessing cannabis leaf. Mr R. Fraser, a duty solicitor, represented the 12 defendants, each of whom was granted legal aid. For the third time in seven days, the courtroom was staffed with extra police armed with long batons. Policemen covered all paths, exits, and doors around and inside the court complex, and police dogs were present. BURGLARY CHARGE Wayne Anthony Spackman, aged 26, a student, charged with the burglary of a chemist’s shop in Innes Road on Sunday, was remanded without plea to April 15. Because the offence was said by Sergeant M. Prj Caldwell to be drug-related, ]’ he sought a surety for bail for Spackman. ;: ■ The defendant was granted bail of $lOOO.
