A day at sea on the frigate Canterbury
The Royal New Zealand Navy frigate Canterbury arrived at her home port in Lyttelton, recently, after training in Australian waters. Canterbury promptly put to sea again laden with guests. These included the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr Mel Foster, representatives of the Armed Forces in Christchurch, and children from Cholmondeley Children’s Home. During the short voyage, the ship’s Wasp helicopter made a demonstration flight and the frigate’s machine guns and twin 4.5-inch guns were fired. While in Australian waters, H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury exercised with Australian aircraft, submarines, and other warships.
Canterbury, a Leander class frigate, was , launched in 1970 by Princess Anne and was commissioned by the Royal New Zealand i Navy in August, 1972. In 1982, Canterbury was E lent to the British Navy for patrols in the t Indian Ocean, freeing British ships to do other I duties during the Falkland Islands campaign. Canterbury then sailed to Australia, and for > more than three months took part in Exercise I Kangaroo ’B3. For the next few months, i Canterbury will be undergoing maintenance at Auckland and the crew will be on leave.
