in Wellington The Government has set up two groups to report on ways to implement its election policy on trade union education. The first group was set up in November, 1984, to investigate and recommend on a number of items. These included: The establishment and funding of an institute of labour studies to co-ordinate all trade union education work. Facilities to be available within education institutions, particularly in technical institutes and community colleges, for trade union training at local level. Possibilities for developing residential trade union courses for advanced study and staff training. Funding of national training positions and their regional co-ordination. Development of curricula for education within trade unions, to be determined from within the trade union movement. The inclusion of occupational health and safety training within the above arrangements. More effective education provision about industrial relations within the State
schools, with responsibility for material being shared by the trade union movement and the Education Department Possible development of radio and television programmes to inform and educate the public about trade union matters. This task force comprises Mr Michael Law, University of Waikato, chairman; Mr Dick Lowe, Federation of Labour; Ms Maryan Street, Combined State Unions; and Mr Jackson Smith, nominated by the F.O.L. to represent Maori interests. The second group is the working party on paid education leave. It comprises the members of the task force and two representatives of the Employers’ Federation, Messrs Norman West and Noel Robinson. Its job is, in line with the Government’s commitment to introduce a scheme of paid education leave, to consider legislation for paid education leave so that authorised trade union representatives can attend approved trade union training courses.
The two groups are expected to report back to the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, early in May.
