£55,000 manuscript

NZPA-AFP London The manuscript of Evelyn Waugh’s novel, “Vile Bodies,” was sold at Christie’s auctions for £55,000 ($143,000) to an unknown bidder. The 1929 work, a satire on the pre-war world of “bright young things,” is dedicated to Waugh’s friends, Bryan and Diana Guinness, of the brewery family. It is the

only autographed manuscript of a Waugh novel not in institutional hands. At the same auction a collection of letters and other material relating to the death of Captain Oates on Scott’s 1912 Antarctic expedition, which appears to support criticism of the explorer, was sold for an unnamed vendor for £4200 ($10,920).
